The Return of the Troubles?

One of the many problems that concern many of us from what is called Brexit is the possible hard border between the North and the South of Ireland. This has already started the

talk of the return of the Troubles that were so prevalent prior to the Good Friday Agreement of 1998 and the St. Andrews Agreement of 2006. From the early 70's to 1998 3,600 people were killed and 30,000 were wounded, many of whom were children. The politics of Irish division is centuries old but there has been relative peace for 20 years. This could change if the UK government creates a hard border between the six counties of the North and the 26 of the South. The trade agreements and the allowing of the Catholic minority to have a greater voice in the politics of the North and the end of rampant discrimination against this group has allowed the de-escalation of violence to occur. As the following articles will attest to is that the scariest part of this story is much of the violence will come from the youth that I am trying, in my small way, to protect.

The first casualty in this new round of violence very well could have been Leona O'Neill on April 18, 2019. A journalist who was covering riots in Derry City (Londonderry) was shot and murdered by the New IRA. When the perpetrators of this murder were found, they had huge stashes of weapons, more than likely to be used if given the excuses to begin the horrors of the Troubles if a hard border was put in place.

As many of you know my mom left the North to America in 1948 at the age of seventeen in order to join family in New York away from violence and discrimination that prevented her from getting gainful employment in Ireland.

This blog is simply a plea to all those involved in the decision making process to think about all the consequences of their actions. Their actions will have a profound impact not just on the economy of both the North and South but the all but guarantee of death in the north from political murders, car bombing and other means of terror that will kill children on both sides of a possible hard border. Please ask those in parliament of the UK to consider the children and a future of peace in all decisions they make. s://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2019/feb/18/hard-border-in-ireland-would-trigger-return-to-violence-says-report
